The Moment She Heard Them

IN THE WORDS OF THE ORIGINAL RECORD

All chapters

During August of 1971 we were living in Salt Lake City, while Gary was going to graduate school. Gary had a break in his studies so we decided on impulse to make a fast trip to California to see his family. At this time Wendy was 4 years old and David 2 years' old.

We called Mom to say we were coming the next morning. I was hurrying with the plans so that we could leave on time. I remembered that Wendy had a birthday party to go to, so I set the timer for 20 minutes.

Five minutes had passed from the timer, but I decided to get her ready, then I could go about my packing without being interrupted. I came downstairs and I could hear them yelling, but it seemed distant and outside. Once again being directed, I went in the garage and opened up our refrigerator.

There our two children set crying softly. All I could say over and over was, "you could have died, you could have died'. Gary came flying down the stairs to see what was the matter.

I had such an empty feeling - no tears, nothing but to hold them both close to me. Later came what terrible thoughts they must have had in such a small, cold, dark place. Also of the lonesome feeling of losing them both.

I testified then and now that the Lord directed me to protect our children.
